Cars...a childhood favorite of mine!

Somehow in our film class, Cars was selcted to be viewed for the last week. I've seen this film countless times throughout my life and love watching it everytime. However, it decided to watch and pay attention to more of cinematography rather than story...because I can pretty much quote the entire movie (I know it's sad). Since this is an animated movie, the shot types and lighting choices are way more flexiable or acessible to use because the animators can make it any way they want to. Looking at this film again and  outside of the story, I believe the cinematography and soundtrack boosted the overall enjoyment.  You need to watch this clip...simply awesome! A lot of the enjoyment of the shot types came from the opening race scene and intro monologue by McQueen. The cuts between the dark trailer McQueen and the cars/sounds racing. You feel the intense shift of quiet to loud sound and I was really intrugued by the choices Pixar made. In terms of shot angles stuck out to...

Moonlight Themes and Review

Initally as "little", he was himself but was always getting picked on but with the help of Kevin, Juan, and theresa they guided him to help shape his own indenitiy. However when we get to act two of Chiron, he really struggles with identity but wants to eagerly fit in. Terrell, his bully does not help whatsoever with his coming-of-age process. After the beatdown by Kevin initiated by Terrell, Chrion is is filled with anger and hits him with a chair in class and gets sent to Atlanta and starts dealing drugs. When we get to Black (act 3), Chrion is barely a shell of a his former self. Wearing baggy clothes, has a grill, and drives a lowrider. When Black meets up with Kevin back in Florida, he picks up on his lack of Indentity. Chiron at the end of the film slowly finds himself returning to a kid that he once was. When we get to act two he no longer wanted to be known as Little and by his real name but Kevin starts giving him the nickname Black and which would gateway us into ...

Breaking Bad. Simply one of the Best TV shows in the last decade.

In the last two years, Breaking Bad has skyrocketed in popularity, espeically for GEN-Z. I could give you the whole summary of the whole show and say why it's awesome but I'm not going to do that. If you enjoy drama-filled, precsion acting, and action shows, then just watch it please. Walter White played by Bryan Cranston and his "sidekick" Jesse Pinkman played by Aaron Paul were some of the best chracters (and their development) were truly amazing. What's funny to me about this show is that it had very low ratings in its' first 3 seasons but gained massive popularity when season 4 came out in 2012. I will have to agree the first season takes a while to digest and understand the story/chracters but once you are in...you're hooked.  I think one of the most unique things done in movie/film history was the reverse progression of Walter White, our main chracter. Most of the time you see in film is a character go from bad to good but for walter he was a good ...

Jaws Review and Scene Study

Heres the scene I picked!  What is the Story?  The “heart” of Jaws occurs at the beach when the mayor and tourists finally get a glimpse of the shark. When the reports of the shark were coming in Brody wanted to shut the beaches down but the mayor was persistent in keeping the beaches open because it was the busiest time of the year for Amity.  From any audience perspective, you could relate to the actors on the beaches becoming terrified of being hurt by the great white. Speilberg carefully selected his shots to be more up close with the shark instead of it being from the sand. I believe this was for the audience to understand the magnitude of the shark and the fear he possessed. Once people were out on the beaches and saw the shark with their own eyes the island collectively knew Brody, Quint, and Matt had to go kill it.  What is the camera doing?  As mentioned before, most of the shots are mid-level or close up with eye-level shots with cuts of Brody on the b...

Swiss Army Man Takeaways

After the in-class viewing of Swiss Army Man directed by Daniels, my initial reaction is that is a very unique film. Typically, this would not be the type of film I would willingly watch on my own but I do appreciate that I watched it. Hank played by Paul Dano is a phenomenal actor, I've seen his work from The Batman and Manny played by Daniel Radcliffe has been a household name in the industry since he was young. Although Dr.Kyburz told us to take the film at face value, I still tried to see the unlying notions or sequences of the film. I always do that when I watch new films and I definitely need to just learn to take in films as they are. That style of viewing films is derived from the multiple Christopher Nolan films I Had to watch back in high school and complete analysis.  Here's the trailer if you are interested in checking out the film!!  Anyways! Let's get back to talking about Swiss Army Man. Some of the thoughts are on the entire basis of the film. I believe Mann...

Reflection of My Film Project

After spending a few weeks on organizing, planning, filming and then editing this short film my group and I made, I was actually happy with what we made. Everyone in the Group (myself, Ishaan, Francisco, Aidan) seemed to care what kind of product we were putting out. Everyone pulled their weight in this film and contributed enough. The origin of this idea started when Fransisco suggested that we do a crime film are we could not decide originally on the genre. From that point, I came up with the foundational idea about a framed murder that detectives needed to figure out. From that point much of the idea and stylistic choices were made somewhat on the fly. We wanted to make this as organically as possible because we all felt that is where the best movies come from.  On the day we did most of our filming, we shot right on campus in the Basement of Wentz Science Center. Found some great rooms to film our two main settings (Murder site, and Detective Room). Those shots went by really f...

Why Jake Gyllenhaal?

Most people know Jake Gyllenhaal as "the guy who got swifted" and thats about it. Maybe some people know him from some movies. Gyllenhaal as been acting for most of his life and has no signs of slowing down. One of my favorites of his is NightCrawler, where he plays a OCD, antisocial person who films major accidents in the L.A area for news stations. He becomes obsessed for getting the perfect shot and has no regard for any other person. He even indirectly kills his partner after a dangerous night filming. I am just so drawn to his acting style in the film.  Another Film that comes to mind is The Zodiac and he plays a young, intelligent (and a bit strange)  jouralist and trying to solve the murders that "The zodiac" committed. Again, he is appealing to emotion acting style, where he uses his skills to draw us in. I tend to favorites actors who lean more on emotional rather then "technical skills". Gyllenhaal is underrated in my opinion with how well he act...
